1. To remain in a place.
2. To continue to be sure or firm; endure.
3. To dwell or sojourn
Sojourn is the word that hit me. To walk alongside on a journey, or even more intimate to be carried or to hold hands on a journey. It is a great picture of intimate closeness with Christ.
I can only relate it to my relationship with my wife. Everyday she and I choose to walk through life's journey holding hands. We learn to love and appreciate eachother everyday as we raise two young boys and desire to have a God centered home. In our 8yrs. of marriage we only continue to grow closer and the bond between us grows stronger. I believe that is how it is with Christ. I have to choose daily to "sojourn" with Him on my journey. And as I abide in Him more the more I will know Him. Keyword: RELATIONSHIP
Here are some verses and quotes that impacted me about Abiding in Christ:
John 15:4 -
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
John 15:7 -
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
1 John 4:13 -
By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
A Quote from "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers -
"Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do" (John xiv.13.) The disciple who abides in Jesus IS the will of God, and his apparently free choices are God's fore-ordained decrees.
I love that quote and that is what hit me the hardest today. That if we are totally abiding with Christ, our will and desires will be perfectly aligned with Christ's and we will be making choices inside of God's will because we are walking right next to Him holding His hand as we journey together. It's a beautiful picture.
